TC Habitat for HumanityTwin Cities Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical ministry and grassroots organization that works to provide affordable housing for low-income households.

They use volunteer labor, donated materials and contributed funds to build and renovate homes in the Twin Cities area. These homes are then sold to low-income buyers, at a price that charges no profit and with long-term no interest mortgage financing.

It is one of the top producers of Habitat homes in the nation. Over 1500 moms, dads and kids are living in homes they helped build. This year, they will build homes for 48 families in need of the stability that comes with home ownership. Once the home is built, it is sold to a qualified low-income family at 0% interest over a 20-30 year mortgage. Before closing and moving into their new home, families are required to invest 300-500 "sweat equity" volunteer labor on their home or other Habitat homes.

Habitat homes are built primarily with volunteer labor.  This is where congregations and organizations can get involved.  For more information on Habitat's relationship with churches, click here.

Specialized jobs that are beyond the skill level of normal individuals are often donated by building professionals.  The potential home owner is also required to put several hours of effort into the project.

First Presbyterian has joined Calvin Presbyterian on several building projects. The work days typically occur once a month on a Saturday, but there are weekday opportunities available.   For workday information, click here.
